I am lucky to be studying what I am very passionate about, and my goal is to lead and create revolutionary technologies but I also believe that a good leader is a leader who helps others to lead. There are thousands of different definitions of leadership and what it means to be a leader, which does make it hard to know exactly what to aim for if one is trying to become an effective leader. A definition that I keep close is “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”. This quote by John Quincy Adams I believe encapsulates the essence of what we see in some of the greatest leaders of today and is something I am trying to model my actions from.

Through this experience I have learned that great leadership involves inspiring teams to innovate, and that this practice brings sustainable success.

Prior to commencing my university studies, I enlisted in the military as an Infantry Soldier; an extremely challenging, however equally rewarding experience. The qualities of mateship, teamwork and discipline are at the core to achieving any objective, and I apply this thinking to all that I do outside of the Army in pursuit of a career in Banking and Financial Services. An important leadership trait is embracing opportunity. Having been fortunate enough to be able to pursue tertiary education I embraced the opportunity to not only further my studies, but also to learn from those around me and to be conscious of team diversity and what makes each person special. This led me to become the Treasurer for the ‘UWA Women in Business' and to volunteer in disadvantaged schools where I was able to support those less privileged than myself. I learned so much during these experiences and found that working towards something bigger than myself is comparable to nothing else.
